Seeing the “Your storage is almost full” warning from Google? You are not alone. Every Google Account gets 15 GB of free storage, and that space is shared between Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. Once it fills up, you can’t upload new files to Drive, back up new photos, and in the worst case you stop receiving new emails in Gmail.
The good news: you can usually free up several gigabytes in less than 20 minutes without paying for Google One. In this guide, we will show you exactly how to free up Google storage space step by step, starting with the fastest wins.
Step 1: Check What Is Using Your Google Storage
Before deleting anything, find out which service is eating your space. Open one.google.com/storage in your browser (or go to Google Drive and click Storage in the left menu). You will see a colored bar that splits your usage between:
- Google Drive – documents, PDFs, videos, backups and other files
- Gmail – emails and, more importantly, their attachments
- Google Photos – photos and videos backed up in Original quality
This tells you where to focus. If Gmail uses 9 GB, cleaning Drive first will not help much.
Step 2: Use Google’s Built-In Storage Manager
Google has a free cleanup tool that most people never use. On the storage page, click Clean up space (sometimes shown as “Free up account storage”). It groups items into categories such as:
- Deleted emails and spam
- Emails with large attachments
- Large files in Google Drive
- Blurry photos, screenshots and large videos in Google Photos
Click any category, review the items and select Delete. This is the quickest way to recover space because Google has already sorted the biggest offenders for you.
Step 3: Free Up Gmail Storage
Gmail is often the hidden storage hog because old attachments pile up for years. Use these search operators in the Gmail search bar:
Find emails with big attachments
- Type has:attachment larger:10M in the Gmail search box and press Enter.
- Review the results. Download anything important to your computer first.
- Select the emails you no longer need and click the Delete icon.
You can change the number to larger:5M or larger:20M to go deeper.
Delete old promotions and social emails
Search for category:promotions older_than:1y and category:social older_than:1y. Select all results (use “Select all conversations that match this search”) and delete them. Thousands of newsletters can easily add up to hundreds of megabytes.
Empty Spam and Trash
Deleted emails still count toward your storage until they are removed from Trash. Open Trash, click Empty Trash now, then do the same in Spam.
If your Gmail spam folder fills up too quickly, read our guide on Gmail spam filter not working to fix the filters.
Step 4: Clean Up Google Drive
Sort files by size
In Google Drive, open Storage from the left sidebar. This view lists every file from largest to smallest. Look for:
- Old videos and screen recordings
- Duplicate ZIP files and installers
- Old phone backups you no longer need
Right-click a file and choose Move to trash.
Check hidden app data and backups
Some apps store hidden data in Drive. On the web, click the gear icon, open Settings > Manage apps and review apps you no longer use. Phone backups are listed separately under Storage > Backups.
If you are deleting an old WhatsApp backup, make sure you no longer need those chats. Our guide on how to restore WhatsApp backup from Google Drive explains how those backups work.
Empty the Drive trash
Files in Drive trash are deleted automatically after 30 days, but they still use storage until then. Open Trash and click Empty trash to get the space back immediately.
Good to know: Google Docs, Sheets and Slides files created before June 1, 2021 do not count toward your storage, but files created or edited after that date do.
Step 5: Reduce Google Photos Storage
Delete blurry photos, screenshots and large videos
Open Google Photos, go to Library (or Collections) and look for Utilities or the Manage storage option. Google suggests screenshots, blurry photos and large videos you might want to remove. Videos are usually the biggest files, so start there.
Convert to Storage saver
Google Photos offers two backup quality options:
- Original quality – full resolution, uses the most space
- Storage saver – slightly compressed photos and videos, uses much less space
In Google Photos settings, open Backup > Backup quality and choose Storage saver for future uploads. On the web, the Recover storage option under Settings can compress your existing photos too. Note that this conversion cannot be undone.
Empty the Photos trash
Deleted photos stay in Trash/Bin for 60 days (backed-up items). Empty the bin to free up the space right away.
Step 6: Check Your Other Google Accounts and Shared Files
Files that other people share with you do not count toward your storage, but files you own do, even if they are in a shared folder. If you uploaded big files to a team folder years ago, they may still be counted under your account. Search Drive with owner:me and sort by size to find them.
Should You Buy Google One?
If you clean everything and still need more space, Google One is the paid upgrade. The basic plan gives you 100 GB, and higher plans offer 2 TB or more, with the option to share storage with family members. Prices vary by country, so check the Google One page for your local price.
Before paying, ask yourself:
- Do you really need old videos in the cloud, or can you move them to an external drive?
- Can you download your data with Google Takeout and keep an offline archive?
- Would a second free Google Account work for one specific purpose (for example, school files)?
For many users, a regular cleanup every few months is enough to stay under 15 GB.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens when my Google storage is full?
You cannot upload new files to Drive, your photos stop backing up, and you may not be able to send or receive emails in Gmail. Existing files stay safe.
Does deleting emails free up Google storage instantly?
Not until you empty the Trash. After you empty Trash and Spam, the storage meter can take up to 24 hours to update.
Do Google Docs count toward storage?
Yes. Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and other files created or modified after June 1, 2021 count toward your 15 GB limit.
Is Storage saver quality good enough?
For most people, yes. Photos are compressed to a maximum of 16 MP and videos to 1080p, which looks great on phones and laptops. Professional photographers may prefer Original quality.
